My Special Cat: Luna the Little Trooper

By: Kym Etherington

Well! where do I start with this one? Our very special girl is named Luna, also known as big girl to my son.

Hi, my name is Kym. I’ve been a Cat Care Volunteer at the Tyneside Adoption Centre since 2019 – you can read about my volunteering journey here. Long before I joined the team at Tyneside, however, I had a rescue experience of my own with a very special little cat who came to be called Luna.

Luna is a very special girl. She came to us at 7 weeks old and was very malnourished. Unfortunately, Luna hadn’t experienced a great degree of socialisation in her early weeks, and so when she came to me she was almost feral in temperament. Luna is your typical ‘lucky’ black cat… but in her case she was quite unlucky before coming to us; she hasn’t had the easiest start!

Luna is now 2 years old but at only 6 months old she had a pyo or pyometera. We noticed she had some discharge leaking out of her vaginal area, which we knew was not normal at all, although it didn’t seem to be affecting her much, we rushed her straight to the vets to be on the safe side. The vet said her pyo had burst and if we left it much longer we would have lost her! I can’t even bare to think that!

The vets immediately put her on IV and ordered emergency surgery.

The thought of my little Luna going under the knife frightened me, as it would any owner, but after four days as an in-patient at my veterinary practice, Luna received her surgery and got completely sterilised.

Fast forward four months…

Luna was upstairs and we heard a bang outside, I ran outside and she was on the floor, meowing so loudly! She’d fallen out of our bedroom window! Once again we rushed her to the vets. There was blood everywhere, her bottom lip had torn off and she’d lost all of the teeth from her bottom jaw as she had fallen face first.

Luna now has no bottom lip left and no bottom teeth! Luna struggles to eat dry food now, so she eats mainly wet, and that suits her nicely! Luna is a very petite cat, but she’s most definitely pushing her nine lives to the limit!

Every cat is a member of the family, but Luna really is my little miracle fur baby and I think she’s finally grown out of being such a cluts! Luna’s now running around with my other cat, Prince, and still does stupid things sometimes but she’s like my little witches cat; she sits on my shoulder all of the time – hence the name Luna!!

To me, Luna is the most special cat in the world, and I wouldn’t change her for anything.

Kym has been a member of our team at the Tyneside Adoption Centre since 2019 as a Cat Care Volunteer. When Kym is not helping out at the centre, she’s kept plenty busy caring for her young son, as well as her two beautiful cats Luna and Prince.
